Fourth time World Champion

At last! I finally have the jersey again. I am overjoyed that next year I can be at the start in the World Champion’s jersey. That makes me prouder than the medal ceremony today.

I have felt well here in Qatar from the start and at the team time trial I had already noticed that I coped well with the circumstances. I owe much of this victory to my old time trial position. Changing back to it was absolutely the right decision.

The race went perfectly. Probably because of my relaxed approach, I could also start out relaxed, found my flow quickly and could hold and even build up my advantage without going really deep. It was like in my best times, when I rode by best time trials, without torturing myself but instead just simply going in my own rhythm. Of course it hurt. That is part of it all.But when you start to not feel well on the bike, push yourself without getting any real pressure on the pressure and then stew over every detail, then it is over. Today it just worked out right.

I took off with ice packs on my back, which of course melted quite soon, but the wet bodysuit cooled me a while longer. Before the race I regulated my body temperature with an ice vest. I told you that at the team time trial I had made an important discovery, which I would tell you about later. This is it: I simply tried to eat something about half an hour before the start, because the body needs a lot of energy to cool off. And shortly before the start I drank a half liter water. I am really happy that I had tested that at the team time trial. I took off with a full stomach and I thought I would explode. My things hit my stomach with every pedal. That was really uncomfortable. After a few kilometers it was good again. In the individual time trial I would probably have broken my neck ;-)

We will now celebrate a bit – I have been promised a cake. Tomorrow I am giving myself a day off. And then on Sunday I am looking forward to supporting my teammates.
